A Day in the Life of the Quad

A view from space would show an area in the middle of Centenary College with four sections, split by cement, and in the center, a small statue of a kind.  It might also show, in an Orwellian Big Brother scenario, numerous people gathering in different areas.  Luckily, I was on the ground to witness first hand the happenings of the quad.

You might notice a few differences between the quad of old (2005) and the quad that we frolic in today.  First of all, the tree show in the first picture is gone.  Also, Centenary College has repaved the sidewalks, and redone the grass.  The changes came as a shock to many people, but in the end, the quad is the quad.

Overlooking the quad is the golden clock tower, which rings every hour on the hour.  Although it was not its intended purpose, it very often signals that a period is about to end.

The quad is the central area of camp.  It is the path to meals in the morning.

It's where counselors eagerly yell out their activities, in hopes of finding all the campers who signed up for them each day.

Just off to the side is where announcements is held.

And here's Tom!

In the center of the quad is the famous sundial.

Before each activity, head counselors, and one select Staff Assistant gather at the sundial for changeover, the time period in between activities, to help facilitate a smooth transition between activities.

A favorite activity that many campers of all ages partake in is afternoon, and evening shade.  Under the shade tree campers sit, relax, cool off, and sometimes a guitar can be found, with campers singing along.

Frisbee throwing is a popular pastime of the quad.

Summer reading is often accomplished under the shade tree.

The quad is also where everyone has snack, and where campers choose their next day's activities.

Campers refill their water bottles, which are essential on hot summer days, on the patio throughout the day...

...and hopefully put the water to good use.

But more than anything, the quad is a place for kids and counselors to hang out.  A lot of the day's events are structured so that everyone is doing something all the time.  But during afternoon shade, evening shade, and whenever else people decide to sprawl out on the grass, the quad serves its purpose.  When campers look back on the good times of camp, many of those memories are located in the quad.
