Centenary College is surrounded by residential houses.  It is easy to forget that they are there, what with the CK bubble that encompasses the entire campus, but they are there.  Sometimes, if you look across the street, you will see some people (whom the staff have affectionately named "townies") skateboarding along the street.  For years, campers could do little but watch, and go home and Google the word "Ollie" to find out what it actually means (according to a popular UK skateboarding website, it is "A jump made by tapping the tail of the board on the ground and sliding your front foot up to the nose of the board whilst in the air.").  But in recent years Campus Kids has developed and improved upon its own skate park.

Located behind the new Bennett-Smith dorms, the skate park is a small fenced in area equipped with all the pieces of equipment needed.

Depending upon skill level, there are ramps to accommodate those with and without the soul of Tony Hawk.

Before anything, however, proper safety equipment must be put on to ensure that the only shredding done is on the ramp.

And because of the fact that the skate park is a bit of a walk from camp, a water cooler is brought each time to prevent dehydration.

A new activity brought to Campus Kids is longboarding.  A longboard is a longer version of the skateboard.  Due to its longer and wider base, it is more stable and travels faster than ordinary skateboards.

And everyone seems to be enjoying them.

As far as skateboards go, beginners are taught the basics.

And a flat, empty parking lot is a wonderful place to learn.

For more advanced boarders...

Falls do occasionally happen--it is part of the sport itself.  But thanks to the mandatory padding, it takes little to get right back up again.

Even if all you're doing is standing on the rail trying to make a picture look good.

And after a hot session in the sun, a little rest under the tent is the perfect ending to a period of skate park.
